Graduated in 2013<\/strong> with a major in Music Business<\/strong>. \u00a0Principal instrument: \u00a0voice.<\/p>\n

Positions<\/span>: \u00a0Co-runs the family business<\/strong>, ELF’s Cakery<\/a>, substitute teacher<\/strong> in local high schools, private academic tutor<\/strong> (mostly math) and music instructor (voice & piano). \u00a0Prayre also does freelance design wor<\/strong>k (resumes, websites), and still gigs with corporate\/wedding bands and does original music.<\/p>\n

Overview<\/span>: \u00a0Prayre moved home (Atlanta, GA) after graduation. \u00a0While at Berklee, all of her business-related projects used her family business, and were implemented. \u00a0She works there part time. \u00a0For over six months\u00a0she worked at a bank, but didn’t like it. \u00a0She had wanted to teach, but was rejected when she applied to work as a substitute teacher in the summer of 2013. \u00a0One year later a regular customer of ELF’s Cakery who worked as a substitute teacher gave her advice on how to apply and make herself a desirable candidate (what her resume should look like, etc.) and put in the good \u00a0word for her. \u00a0She was accepted, and started substitute teaching in the fall of 2014. \u00a0Substitute teaching doesn’t pay great, but the hours are flexible, and substitute teaching gets her many (well-paying) private students. \u00a0She hopes to open her own school one day!<\/p>\n

“It will be tough, but there are things out there that you can find to do that will still fulfill your financial obligations while \u00a0allowing you to pursue your passion in music as well. \u00a0Don’t have unrealistic expectations. \u00a0Give yourself time and it’s OK to stay at home until you figure it out. \u00a0Had I tried to just completely go out on my own from the beginning, I might have had to stay at the bank and been completely unhappy.”<\/p>\n

Prayre at Berklee, singing with the “Divas Ensemble.” \u00a0A voice principal, Prayre stated Berklee as a Performance major but switched to Music Business upon deciding that it would be better for her career.<\/p>\n

I have been interviewing Berklee graduates who have successful careers NOT<\/strong>involving music. \u00a0Interviews will be posted biweekly.<\/em><\/h5>\n
People interviewed are all Berklee graduates who enjoy their field, expect to be in it for at least a few more years, and earn at least $45,000\/year.<\/em><\/h5>\n
Conversations typically last 45 minutes, with a lot of plus-or-minus.\u00a0 They start with the graduates detailing what they do, then we follow their trajectory of their career\u2014specifically, how they got both their current job and the jobs leading up to that.\u00a0 Finally, we discuss their thoughts on their Berklee education vis a vis their career.<\/em><\/h5>\n
